Lemoncello…not Limoncello

And just like that, our Lemoncello is back in stock after the first batch was sold out before it was even officially launched!

But Lemoncello, you say? Why not Limoncello? Well, at this stage I’m sure you’ve guessed our products are just a little bit different. But before we get into why ours is different, let’s delve into the history of Limoncello.

What is Limoncello
Limoncello., a vibrant and zesty liqueur with origins deeply rooted in Italy, but is now enjoyed around the world. Linemcello uses a neutral base spirit (think Vodka if you’re making it at home) in which lemon rind is soaked and sugar added to create a delightful lemon-infused drink, known for its refreshing taste and distinctive yellow hue.

The Birth of Limoncello
Limoncello originated on the sunny Amalfi Coast of southern Italy, a region with fertile soil and abundant lemon groves, a perfect foundation for the creation of this iconic liqueur.

During the Middle Ages, monks living along the Amalfi Coast harnessed their knowledge of herbs and botanicals to create a wide range of liqueurs. They began infusing alcohol with lemon peels to produce a bright, citrus-flavored elixir with digestive properties. These early iterations of Limoncello were primarily consumed for their medicinal benefits.

In the early 20th century, it is believed that Limoncello as we know it today was first crafted by Maria Antonia Canale, a local woman from Capri, who refined the recipe and perfected the balance of flavors, creating a Limoncello that was distinctively sweet, tangy, and aromatic. During this time Limoncello production remained largely a family affair, with each household in the Amalfi Coast region developing its unique recipe and production methods. Passed down through generations, these closely guarded family secrets resulted in subtle variations in taste and character. Local distilleries began producing Limoncello on a larger scale to meet the growing demand from visitors and tourists.

Limoncello's popularity soared in the latter half of the 20th century, as tourists visiting the Amalfi Coast encountered the delightful liqueur and brought bottles back as souvenirs. With its vibrant yellow color and refreshing taste, Limoncello became synonymous with the spirit of Italy and the Mediterranean lifestyle. Its popularity spread beyond the region's borders, attracting international attention and leading to increased commercial production.

Global Expansion
As the world embraced Limoncello, its production expanded to other parts of Italy and even beyond. Distilleries around the world began crafting their own versions of Limoncello, utilizing their local lemon varieties and creating their own recipes.

What is Lemoncello?
Fondly nicknamed Lemoginello by us, our Lemoncello is intentionally created to be different from a standard Limoncello. Locally sourced lemons are infused in a specially created spicy gin base, resulting in a zesty and refreshing lemon liqueur that has all the elements of a traditional lemoncello with added complexity from the gin.

This resulted in a more approachable and drinkable version of a Limoncello for those who are not a fan of the intense sweetness.

This also ensure our Lemoncello complied with our #1 production philosophy of versatility - meaning each spirit must be able to be drink neat and carry through to cocktail, allowing you to drink Our Spirit Your Way.
