Don Pedros Down Under!

Most Aussies look at me like I’m crazy when I talk about a Don Pedro. That’s because it’s mostly a South African beverage that came about in the 1970s, and it’s generally not known on these fair Aussie shores.

A Don Pedro (sometimes also known as a Dom Pedro) is essentially an alcoholic milkshake (or thickshake in Aussie). We learned about them as kids when our parents would order a Whisky Don Pedro after a meal at a restaurant. I suspect that the whisky used would have been a Bells, or Johnny Walker Black. When we got older (of legal drinking age :-)) we would partake in this tradition. For Sam it was a Black Sambuca Don Pedro, for Chris is was Kaluha Don Pedro - each to their own… The beautiful thing about a Don Pedro is that you can make it what you want - add your own favourite spirit to vanilla ice cream and add a little cream or milk - and voila!

Now we need to talk about milkshakes for a moment. Milkshakes in South Africa are essentially the same as Thickshakes in Australia. Now imagine Sam’s surprise when she ordered her first milkshake in Aussie and essentially got flavoured milk! So, for the sake of this article, whenever we reminisce about milkshakes, it’s a thickshake :-)!!

Sam’s favourite milkshake as a child was a Horlicks milkshake. Horlicks is a strong malted powdered drink enjoyed with hot milk - super cosy and heart-warming. Imagine those malty flavours in a milkshake, and make it alcoholic!!! And that’s where Sam decided to get a little adventurous with our Naughty Festive Gin - let’s try it in a Don Pedro. Delicious!!!! Absolutely damn delicious!

So - we’ve created a recipe for it and popped it on our website. Get a bottle of our Naughty Festive Gin, and try it our for yourself!! And then, the next time someone tells you about a Don Pedro - you can tell them you’ve had one!
